Championship Season Recap: D2, D1, and Sectionals

D2 Results:

D2’s was a success for Ad Astra. We had seven swimmers achieve new D1 Time Standards: Ava Cormaney, Lanie Whitehill, Riley Sirimongkhon-Dyck, Maddie Dean, Evan Dussiler, Abigail Frye, and Brandon Bunting. This is the highest number in all of Ad Astra history. It was special seeing the positivity, the camaraderie, and the fast swimming by all AAAA swimmers. This was a first time for many swimmers to swim a prelim/final format. I loved seeing the smiles when each athlete had their name called out competing in the Top 8. Several swimmers swam personal best times and capitalized on the opportunity to swim an event twice.

We also had five swimmers take home gold medals, and a few taking home more than one:  Ava Cormaney(4 golds),  Lanie Whitehill (2 golds), Lauren Amrein (1 gold), Riley Sirimongkhon-Dyck (1 gold), and Kathryn Bach (1 gold).

Quad A Highest Placing at LSC Championships

Ad Astra made team history when we finished 2nd behind the Kansas City Blazers at the D1 Championships in Topeka.  This is our highest finish at the championship meet and it was a team effort. We had 43 athletes attend and had relays in all 14 and Under Divisions

9-10 Girls

Payton Krug led the way for Ad Astra in the 9-10 girls division. Payton was in the top 8 in all of her events and swam in finals for those races. Achieving several AA Time Standards and taking home 4 medals was the highlight of Payton’s weekend. Payton’s highest finish came in the 50 breaststroke with a second place, just missing her AAA Time Standard and dropping 3 seconds.  Lanie Whitehill was Ad Astra’s other 9-10 girl competing at Division 1’s. Lanie started the season in September with only a few B time standards, and not having any qualifications for a Division Meet. As the season went on, Lanie qualified for D2’s in the majority of her races, then qualified for D1’s in both breaststrokes, and then came to D1’s in Topeka and scored in the Top 16 in both of her events. To top it off- she swam her breaststroke times under the A Time Standard.

9-10 Boys

Noah Florence and JT Amrein are two familiar names in the 9-10 Boys Age Group. Every night of finals, you would see these two boys racing in the Top 16. JT Amrein swam 8 personal best times, 7 AA Time Standards, and 2 A Time Standards. Noah Florence put on a performance for the crowd for D1’s when he competed in a swim off for 8th place in the 100IM. Noah cut 4 seconds, missed the AAA time standard by three one hundredths of a second. It set him up for a fun night of racing in finals. Noah took home a medal in the 100 breast finishing 3rd with a AA Time Standard.  Riley Sirimongkhon-Dyck had just swum a spectacular meet at D2’s, where he had qualified for six D1 events. This was his first time at Spring D1’s and he did a wonderful job of competing against the best in the LSC. He had personal best times in his backstrokes.

11-12 Girls

If there were a high point award for D1’s Claire Campbell would have won again. At Claire’s last 11-12 year old meet, Claire went out in style. Claire went above and beyond and achieved six AAAA Time Standards and three AAA Time Standards. Her 50 freestyle time of 24.76 put her in the Top 20 in the Country for 12 years olds this year. Claire took home all gold and silver medals. Ainlsey Krug- just 11 years old- had five Top 8 finishes, achieved a new AAA time in the 100 backstroke, and swam personal best times. Her other times were all A and AA Time Standards. Janet Stefanov achieved her AAA Time Standard in the 50 Back, finishing 6th. Janet also swam in the Top 16 in three other events with personal best times and A and AA Time Standards.

Ava Cormaney had a breakout season, where she started the season with not one D1 Time standard. By the end of the season- Ava had a full load of events. Ava swam a stellar meet at D2’s qualifying for D1’s in all events, achieving A times, and winning the majority of her races. She took that momentum into D1’s and achieved her first ever AA Time Standard and placed in the Top 16. Her highlight came finishing 1st in the B final in the 100 Breast on Sunday, dropping 4 seconds total on the day.  Marian Frick just aged up to 11-12 this season, but that didn’t stop her from competing against the best breaststrokers in the LSC. Marian placed Top 8 in the 100 Breast and did so in AA Time Standard fashion. She also finished Top 8 in the 50 breaststroke, but was unable to compete at night due to prior obligations. Morgan Jones and Maddie Dean- both who competed in a full schedule of events at D2’s- met their goals and competed at D1’s in individual events as 11- year olds.

11-12 Boys

Stephen Johnson competed in his last 11-12 year old meet, as he turned 13 on Sunday of the meet. Stephen took full advantage and raced every opportunity he was given. Stephen ended the meet with seven AAA Time Standards and all gold, silver, and bronze medals. He took home the gold in the 100, 200, and 500 Free. Josh Florence came to D1’s with goals of achieving AAA Time Standards, and he did just that. He achieved his first ever AAA Time Standard in the 500 Free, and also finished 2nd in the event. Before this season, Josh had never even competed in the 500, so it was a great way to finish the winter season. Josh also finished in the Top 8 in 8 individual events achieved AA Time Standards and breaking huge time barriers in all events. Evan Dussilier competed at D1’s in three events, after coming off of D2’s. Evan had a superb meet at D2’s where he qualified for D2’s in two additional events. Evan swam personal best times at D1’s.

13-14 Girls

Emily Venters showed up to race on Day One and competed throughout the last event. Emily swam seven personal best times, competed in eight swims at night, and achieved AA and AAA Time Standards. Emily took home the Gold in the 400IM- as it was a best time and an AAA Time.  Sydney Sirimongkhon-Dyck competed in three events, with her best finish in the 3rd in the 100 Fly with a best time. Sydney would have competed in the 50 Free final, but was DQ’ed for a false start in prelims. Sydney would go onto Sectionals to compete in that event.

Mary Reed- Weston had a meet with personal best times and Top 16 finishes. Mary had a great performance in the 500 free dropping 4 seconds with an AA time standard and finishing 12th. Mary also finished 13th in the 200 breaststroke with a best time. Mary swam personal best times in two other events. Kara Krannawitter scored points for the team when she finished 16th in the 1000, very close to her best time. She also competed in three individual events throughout the weekend. Brittany Archer qualified in the 1000 Free and the 1650 Free and scored points in both events finishing 15th and 9th respectively. Simone Herlihy qualified in seven personal events, finishing very close to her best times. Abigail Frye qualified in two individual events, and swam near her best times, coming off a full weekend at D2’s.

13-14 Boys

Danny Christie had an opportunity of second swims at D1’s as he swam in seven events in finals. His highest finish coming in the 500 Free and 100 Fly with a 4th place finish. Danny swam two AAA Time standards- 500 Free and 200 IM. Danny swam a personal best time in four events. Evan Eskilson’s highlight moment came when he broke the 1:00 minute barrier in the 100 back for the first time. He swam best times in three events, and swam in finals for four of his events. His highest finish came in the 200 Back finishing 6th.  Elijah Florence competed in two events, both being butterfly- and finished with a personal best time in the 200 Fly. Elijah competed in a full schedule of events at D2 the weekend prior. Oliver Tillinghast swam his last meet with Ad Astra and finished in the Top 8 in his 200 fly with a best time. Brandon Bunting qualified at D2’s in the 50 Free, and did a great job attending D1’s and competing.

15 and Over Girls

Our older ladies raced well at Division 1s, earning second swims in multiple events.  Many of these athletes swam light loads due to the fact they went onto Sectionals the following weekend.  Miranda Rohn competed in her last SCY meet with AAAA and posted her seasonal bests.  Newcomer Lauren Amrein posted a best time in her 100 Breast and finished in the Top 16. Lucy Sirimongkon-Dyck, Gretchen Frick, and Cierra Campbell all competed in Jenks the following weekend for the Sectional Meet.

15 and Over Boys

David Christie and Canaan Campbell competed at D1’s and swam personal best times, but were using the weekend to prepare for Sectionals in Jenks. Both were in attendance racing at D1’s and cheering on their teammates.
