3/12/2013 By Jill Castle, MS, RD Parents and coaches want their swimmers to feel good, eat well and perform to their best ability. But that’s not always easy to accomplish when you have growing bodies, different food preferences and developmental influences to consider. At a recent swim meet, I heard a variety of food complaints from parents: “Sarah didn’t eat at all during the meet!” “Every time I saw Sam, he was at the concession stand eating fruit snacks. He had at least 3 bags this afternoon!” “Emily had a...

By Chris Rosenbloom, PhD, RD, CSSD A young swimmer asked me about after-practice recovery snacks, specifically if she needed a special product marketed as an “after” workout recovery drink. She didn’t really like the taste of the commercial product and wondered if there were good alternatives. I admired her “food first” approach and suggested she try some of the recovery snacks listed below. A good recovery snack provides carbohydrate to replenish muscle glycogen and a small amount of protein to aid in repairing and strengthening muscles. Recovery nutrition is most...
D2 Results: D2’s was a success for Ad Astra. We had seven swimmers achieve new D1 Time Standards: Ava Cormaney, Lanie Whitehill, Riley Sirimongkhon-Dyck, Maddie Dean, Evan Dussiler, Abigail Frye, and Brandon Bunting. This is the highest number in all of Ad Astra history. It was special seeing the positivity, the camaraderie, and the fast swimming by all AAAA swimmers. This was a first time for many swimmers to swim a prelim/final format. I loved seeing the smiles when each athlete had their name called out competing in...
The following is our meet schedule for the summer. I will also post it in the news section on the website so you can look there for reference. We have chosen the meets that we think are best for the athletes. There are two meets listed on the schedule that we will need to know in advance if your child is participating. These meets are considered our travel meets. The first travel meet we must have 10 athletes commit in order to attend. This meet is located in...

For some swimmers this was their last meet of the season- all the hard work they put in over the 6 months paid off! One interesting fact for the weekend was that all 14 and under swimmers went at least a best time and several swimmers swam all personal best times! The relays were a highlight of the weekend for AAAA. It was great to see Ad Astra having multiple...

Team Missouri Valley placed second at this year’s All-Star swim meet behind Team Colorado, 1,953 to 1,218. It was a great showing and AAAA played its part. True Blue Igloo set us up for the remainder of the season and helped us see what we still need to work on for...
